MOVIE REVIEWS

It's 1952, and reporter Roland Lu finds his hometown overcome by the scourge of McCarthyism. Animosity against Chinese-Americans is at a fever pitch in Millville, with Mayor Frank Dugan at the center. It all makes for a big story, and Roland just might betray his fellow Chinese-Americans to win laurels for his journalistic career. Humanity is the invading force in this animated sci-fi film. After the destruction of Earth, mankind has taken to space in a desperate search for a hospitable planet. When they find one, the only thing that stands in their way is the peaceful citizens of the planet, and the humans declare war. Donald Faison leaves his SCRUBS and the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital behind for this starring role as a pot-smoking delivery man. Leo Jackson (Faison) isn't exactly a model employee; even though he works for his mother (who is also his landlady), Leo and his shoddy work ethic have him in danger of being fired. But that's nothing compared to the on-the-job hazards when he accidentally drops off a hefty amount of coke at the wrong address. British helmer Richard Curtis (LOVE ACTUALLY) directs a cast of his countrymen (plus lone American star Philip Seymour Hoffman) in this comedy set in Britain in 1966. While the BBC would allow only two hours of rock and roll to be played on its airwaves a week, pirate stations broadcast music to the pop-starved masses. THE BOAT THAT ROCKED also stars Bill Nighy, Nick Frost, Rhys Ifans, and Kenneth Branagh.
